Welcome to the African American Heritage Institute’s new website. Our mission is to establish and operate an institution primarily responsible for the research, recordation, preservation, celebration and education for students and the general public about African American history and heritage in the City of Wilmington and more broadly, New Castle County and the State of Delaware. On this site we will deepen your understanding of contributions by Delawareans you may already know, and introduce you to lessor-known persons who have also made significant contributions in the areas of law, medicine, business, education, politics, sports, and culture.
As you tour this site, we hope you leave with a thirst for knowledge and a motivation to explore these topics and individuals further. It is our hope that the information contained herein gives all our visitors a greater appreciation for the past, and that knowledge and appreciation informs decisions and behaviors in the present and future.
To our younger audience we would hope you recognize yourself in some of the personalities you meet and learn about here, and you use that knowledge and recognition as you to plan your own future. For all visitors, regardless of age or ethnicity, we hope the information on this site helps you better appreciate our shared history and fosters greater appreciation for each other.
Ultimately, our mission is to deepen our understanding of our past to build a brighter future.
